Rome: Day 3

Day 3 in Rome we headed back to the Vatican. This time we were able to take a tour of the Vatican Gardens. This is a tour that not many people are able to do. We were extremely lucky to be able to do this. Karl-Michael had a connection that was able to get us in. I am so glad we were able to go! It was incredible!

The Vatican Gardens are the personal gardens of the Pope. The current Pope wanders through them every afternoon! They are absolutely beautiful.

There are many statues throughout the gardens, which were all gifts to the Pope.

This area was one that we couldn't go in to. It was built specifically for the Pope to have a place to take his friends and to spend time with them. We could get a small peak in through the fence.

The resident turtle ...

I loved that throughout the gardens you could always see St. Peter's Basilica peaking through.

Here we are in front of the Fountain of the Sacrament.

Monument to St. Peter

I loved this Fountain of the Eagles. It was difficult to try and get the whole thing in one picture because it was so big.

They had flowers and plants from all over the world. Some of my favorites were the desert plants.

This statue was given as a gift to Pope John Paul II. He was shot in 1981 in an assassination attempt. They kept the bullet and it is inside this statue! I think that was such a great idea.

This was probably one of my favorite gardens. I think it is so beautiful how it is all laid out.

I love this picture because it shows how great Andrew was to me the whole trip! He was so sweet to carry my purse around for me the whole time! Most of the times he had my purse, his stuff, plus my camera. He never even complained. He's the best!

There was this very cool tunnel that you had to walk through to get to another part of the gardens. Here we are going in ...

... and coming out.

The heliport. I wish I had my own heliport in my garden! (I guess I would need a helicopter too.)

I thought this picture was interesting. I wonder what we were all thinking here. I was probably thinking that I was so happy we got to tour the gardens!

The gardens were great. It was super hot and we all left there with about 20 mosquito bites, but it was definitely worth it.

After our tour of the gardens we went to another great gelato shop. This one had even more flavor options, most of which were chocolate. PERFECT!

Annette and I realized that we were twins with wearing pink and black, so we had to take a picture.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the Vatican Gardens. They are almost as good as going there myself.

Wow! Diane you are a great photographer! I really liked the picture with camera focused on the water in the foreground and the unfocused St. Peter's in the background.

Whoa, that's so cool you were able to tour the Pope's personal gardens!!

Very cool water splashing shot.

I'm impressed with Andrew carrying all of your stuff! In the UK, Matt would carry my purse occasionally when I complained a lot but only for like 5 minutes and then he couldn't stand it any longer. :)
