Baltimore - Antietam

On our 2nd day of the Baltimore trip we decided to go out to the Antietam Battlefield. The Battle of Antietam is known for the bloodiest one day battle in American History. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing after 12 hours of fighting. I have been to a few of the Civil War battlefields, but had not made it to Antietam, so I was excited to go.

The drive out there was absolutely beautiful. I love all the trees in Baltimore.
After getting a little lost, we finally found the battlefield. We decided the easiest way to see the whole battlefield was to take the audio tour in our car. So we drove around for a couple of hours. We took a lot of pictures on the battlefield tour and I tried to narrow them down, but it was difficult to do.
This is a monument dedicated to Clara Barton:

JJ was a trooper during the whole tour, and Andrew did a good job at keeping him company.

These upside down cannons represented fallen Generals.

This is what they call "bloody lane" or sunken road. Here more than 5000 soldiers were killed, which led to "blood flowing like a river down the lane."
On the right hand side is a tower that is still used today for war exercises and practice.
Andrew climbed to the top and took these pictures with a great view of the battlefield.

This is Burnside's Bridge.

At the end of the tour we spent some time hanging around the visitors center.
While Andrew was working on a conference call.

We loved Antietam. It was so interesting to learn about the Battle and the History.
On our way out we stopped at the National Cemetery.
It was a great history filled day!

I bet you loved that! Sounds interesting. I remember, while visiting DC and Maryland a few years ago, how green it is out there. The freeways are just lined with trees. It's pretty refreshing.
