First Solid Food

We waited until Gavin was 6 months old before we tried to give him any solid food. After we had his 6 month appointment and his doctor gave us the go ahead we decided to start with rice cereal. My mom was in town that weekend so she was there to help us record it and take pictures. I was very excited to finally give him "real food" and I was sure that he was going to just absolutely love it.

It was on March 21st that we first tried to feed him rice cereal. I told Andrew to get him a bib on and this is how he came out. Gavin looked excited to try his food though.
He was very curious what we had in front of him and of course he tried to grab it from us.
He wasn't sure about Andrew trying to put something in his mouth. He just wanted to grab the spoon with his hands.
We got a little bit in his mouth and he was not happy about it.
He was extremely unimpressed with this food that we told him was going to be so good.
Not excited that we are trying a second time to put more food in his mouth.
I thought that maybe if I tried it that he would eat. Nope.
He just started clamping down his mouth and refused to let us put anything near him.
We tried rice cereal for a few more days with no success. He wouldn't even let us get the spoon anywhere near his mouth. So we decided to stop and wait a couple of weeks and see if he would like it then. We waited and then we tried again and he wanted nothing to do with it again. So after a few days of trying rice cereal, we tried avocado (4/21). I had read in a few different books that avocado is a great first food for babies. Well, no surprise but he wanted nothing to do with it. Again he would just clamp his mouth shut and not let us get anything in.
Not loving the avocado.
So after a few days of trying the avocado we moved on to the banana (4/24). I was certain that he would just love the banana. NOPE! The only way that we get any food in is to sneak it in by giving him his pacifier and when he goes to put that in his mouth we stick the spoon in. That makes him really mad and he eventually begins refusing to put anything in his mouth. (smart kid.)

So I have given up for now. I am tired of trying to force him to eat. I really thought that he would love to eat, but I guess not. I was all excited about making his food for him and feeding him. So I guess selfishly I really want him to start eating. We will try again in a couple of weeks.

Here are a couple fun videos of when we first tried to feed him.

That is too funny. Good luck trying again - those little jaws seem clamped pretty tight.

How on earth will he stay fat if he doesn't eat?!?

Try scooping some avacado or banana onto your finger and let him suck on that. I tried it with Brooke last week and it worked well. That way it didn't get pushed back out of her mouth with her tongue. Keep trying. I don't know if waiting is going to help, but good luck!
